Terminology

Terminology On this page, we explain some of the words and expressions we like to use (that admittedly can be quite confusing!). If there’s a word you don’t quite understand that isn’t on this list, or if you struggle with grasping one of our explanations, feel free to reach out to us and ask about it in the Contact tab. Types of clothing: Casual wear With casual wear, we refer to clothing that is typically worn in everyday life for both comfort and practicality, and that aren’t restricted by any dresscodes or other social rules. These are clothes you wear when you’re just at home by yourself, or when you go out for activities or events where clothing isn’t something that receives too much attention. Garments that we look for when evaluating whether a store can be considered to offer what we regard as casual wear include jeans, sweatpants, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and hoodies, just to name a few. Formal wear Formal wear refers to clothing that is worn during situations in which appearance, impressions, and behavior are considered particularly important. The spectrum of situations of this type is considerably broad, and spans everything from opera or ballet performances to funerals, graduation ceremonies, birthday parties, and general gatherings. Since the spectrum of both formal situations and formal clothing is so vast, we have added an additional category called “occasion wear“, which represents particularly formal pieces of clothing. Garments that we consider to represent formal wear include dresses, skirts, buttoned shirts, blazers, and also some traditional folk costumes.  Occasion wear Occasion wear (or wear for special occasions, as we sometimes refer to it as) is a subcategory of formal wear, and involves clothing worn during situations that are so so unique that they require clothing that goes beyond the ordinary. These situations can involve proms, graduation parties, certain holiday parties, funerals, or any other occasion where one is expected to wear the best that one has to offer. Items of clothing that we consider to be occasion wear include particularly festice dresses, as well as suits and tuxedos. Business wear Business wear refers to clothing worn in professions where attires and presentation are something that needs to be paid attention to, even if there is no outright uniform or dresscode. These are clothes that are worn during business meetings, legal proceedings, and in leadership roles. The blazer is what we consider one of the most representative items of business wear, but buttoned shirts and formal skirts may also be considered. Knitwear Traditionally, knitwear refers to clothing that has been knitted. This is a definition we agree with, but since we don’t have a separate category for items made out of wool, we may sometimes also use knitwear to describe wool products. In order for a store to be considered for inclusion in this category, there needs to be a clear section where one can find these items. Occasional items of knitwear in a larger selection of general clothing do not suffice. Outerwear Outerwear refers to clothing that is designed to be worn outdoors, and which typically equips its wearer with protection from wind, cold weather, or water. This may include jackets, headwear, and gloves, along with other items. Some stores may advertise their products as outerwear despite not really showing any attributes that would make the item suitable to be worn outdoors, and in this case we may abstain from adding a store to this category, but typically, this is a very straight-forward category. Do note that shoes are not included in our database, and therefore a selection of shoes will not influence the chances of a store to be added to this category. Rainwear Rainwear is a subcategory of outerwear, and refers to waterproof clothing that protects its wearer from rain. Typically, this involves rainjackets, although rain-trousers are also possible. Do note that umbrellas are not considered to be items of clothing in ourdatabase, and will therefore not influence a store’s chances of being added to the rainwear category. Sportswear Sportswear refers to clothing that is specifically designed to be worn during physical exercise or while practicing a sport of some kind. These items are typically stretchy or loose, allowing their wearer to move without restriction, and they may also have qualities relating to air passage or sweat handling. In order for a store to be added to this category, they need to have a specific section where sportswear is offered. Generally comfortable pieces of clothing, such as sweatpants or t-shirts, are not considered to be sportswear, unless they are included in a store’s sportswear-section, since there is no gurantee that they will be suitable for practicing sports. Swimwear We typically consider swimwear to be a subcategory of sportswear, and it refers to clothing that is designed to be worn while swimming. This involves swimsuits, swim trunks, swim shorts, speedos, and swim shirts. Do note that certain items of clothing that are typically worn during water sports may not be considered swimwear. Board shorts, for instance, are explicitly designed for surfing rather than swimming, and would therefore be categorized as sportswear rather than swimwear, even if they are very similar to pieces of swimwear. Wedding wear Wedding wear involves clothing designed to be worn by the bride or the groom during their wedding ceremony. We typically don’t consider clothes designed to be worn by wedding guests as wedding wear. In order for a store to be added to this category, there needs to be a specific section where wedding wear is offered. This is to ensure that the purpose of the clothing is not left up to be interpreted by the consumer. Underwear Underwear refers to clothing that is designed to be worn under other clothing, typically in direct contact with the skin. As of now, we only add stores to the underwear category if their main product range is underwear. This means that stores that may offer underwear as part of a larger selection are not included, and the
